Best Swim Caps for Locs and Braids (2026)

The problem was never your hair. It was a cap cut for one head shape.

How we pick

The short answer

The SOUL CAP Extra Large is the pick for locs, braids, afros and weaves: the extra volume sits in the crown, so it covers a protective style instead of flattening it. For shoulder-length braids or a bun, the TYR Long Hair cap puts the volume at the back instead.

Why a standard cap does not work

A standard silicone cap is a dome cut to a single assumption: that there is a thin layer of hair lying flat against the scalp. Locs, braids, twists, a weave or an afro are not that. They have volume, and that volume sits somewhere specific — in the crown, at the back, or all over.

Forcing a standard cap over that volume does three things, none of them good. The cap is already at full stretch before it is on, so it tears or rolls off mid-swim. The tension pulls at the hairline, which causes breakage exactly where it is least welcome. And the cap compresses the style flat, which is often the whole reason somebody wanted a cap in the first place.

The fix is not a tighter cap or a different technique. It is a cap with the volume built in, and that is a real product category now rather than an improvisation.

Crown volume or rear volume

This is the one decision that matters, and it is decided by where your hair sits rather than by how long it is.

If your hair occupies the crown — an afro, locs worn loose, a full head of box braids — buy the extra-large crown-volume cap. If it is pulled back into a bun or a ponytail, the asymmetric long-hair cap is both cheaper and less draggy. If you are between the two, the XL cap is the safer error, because a cap that is slightly roomy can be sized down and a cap that is too small cannot be made bigger.

SOUL CAP Extra Large

SOUL CAP Extra Large

Built for hair that every other cap ignores — afros, locs, weaves, braids — in genuinely large sizes.

Specifications

Material
Silicone
Sizes
Large and extra large
Hair types
Afro, locs, braids, weaves
Fit
High-volume crown

What works

  • The volume is in the crown, so it covers a protective style rather than flattening it
  • Reduces the breakage that comes from forcing hair into a standard cap
  • Silicone seals well despite the size
  • Covers adults and older children with large heads, not just textured hair

What doesn’t

  • Oversized on anyone who does not need the volume — it will slip
  • More drag than a fitted cap, which matters if you race

Who it’s for

Swimmers with textured or protectively styled hair, or anyone a standard cap simply does not fit.

Bottom line

If a standard cap has never fit your hair, this is the category that solved it. Size down only if it slips.

TYR Long Hair Wrinkle-Free Silicone Cap
2. Also goodTYR

TYR Long Hair Wrinkle-Free Silicone Cap

An asymmetric cap with extra volume at the back, which is the only design that takes a bun without squeezing.

Specifications

Material
Silicone
Shape
Asymmetric, extra rear volume
Hair length
Long, braided, locs
Finish
Wrinkle-free

What works

  • The extra rear volume is real, not marketing — a ponytail or bun goes in without dragging hair forward
  • Silicone does not catch and tear hair the way latex does
  • Wrinkle-free molding means fewer creases to leak at
  • Holds its shape across a season rather than going slack

What doesn’t

  • The asymmetric shape is easy to put on backwards, which undoes the whole point
  • Warmer than lycra, which is noticeable in a heated pool

Who it’s for

Anyone with hair past the shoulders, braids, locs, or volume that a standard cap crushes.

Bottom line

The long-hair default. If a standard cap has ever given you a headache, this is the fix.

Speedo Silicone Long Hair Cap
3. Also goodSpeedo

Speedo Silicone Long Hair Cap

Extra interior room in a conventional shape — less specialized than the TYR, and easier to get on right.

Specifications

Material
Silicone
Shape
Domed, extra interior volume
Hair length
Long
Fit
One size, adult

What works

  • Symmetric shape, so there is no wrong way round
  • Enough room for a low ponytail without the rear bubble the TYR has
  • Thick enough to last a season of chlorine
  • Cheaper and more widely stocked than specialist long-hair caps

What doesn’t

  • Not enough volume for a high bun, thick braids or locs
  • Domed crown can slide back on a small head

Who it’s for

A swimmer with long but not voluminous hair who swims regularly and wants one cap that just works.

Bottom line

The sensible middle option. Only step up to the TYR or a SOUL CAP if this one visibly squeezes.

Sizing an extra-large cap

XL caps are sold in large and extra-large rather than by head circumference alone, because the thing being sized is hair volume rather than skull size. Two measurements make the choice obvious.

  • Head circumference around the forehead and the widest part of the back of the head, over your hair as it will be worn. Over an afro or loose locs this is dramatically larger than your bare measurement, which is the point.
  • Front-to-back over the top, from the hairline over the crown to the nape, again over the hair as worn.
  • Then compare against the brand's chart, not against your usual cap size. Brands publish real numbers for these caps because they know the fit is the entire product.

If the cap slips off at the back of the head mid-swim, it is a size too large. If it leaves a deep red line at the forehead or gives you a headache, it is a size too small. The general method, including how to measure if you are buying for a child, is in swim cap sizing guide.

What a cap does and does not do for your hair

It does cut chlorine exposure substantially, keep hair out of your face and off the goggle strap, and reduce the mechanical friction that causes breakage when hair moves freely in water for an hour.

It does not keep hair dry. No cap does, because the seal at the hairline is not watertight and was never designed to be. Anyone selling a cap as waterproof is selling you a disappointment, and the honest version of that conversation is in do swim caps keep hair dry.

The habit that does more than the cap choice: wet your hair with clean water before you put the cap on. Hair that is already saturated with fresh water absorbs far less pool water, and damp hair slides into a cap instead of grabbing at it. A light conditioner or leave-in before the cap goes on does the same job twice over.

Putting on a high-volume cap without a fight

  1. Gather the style the way you want it to sit — up and back for locs and braids, loosely contained for an afro. Do not try to flatten it.
  2. Put both hands inside the cap and spread it with the backs of your fingers, not your nails. Nails are what tear silicone.
  3. Place the front edge at your hairline first, holding the cap open and high above the crown.
  4. Roll the cap back and down over the volume in one motion, letting the crown fill the space rather than pushing hair forward.
  5. Run a finger around the hairline to seat the edge evenly, and check the back is pulled down to the nape.

Goggles go over the cap, or under the strap but over the cap's edge — either way the cap holds the strap in place so it does not ride up at the back mid-length. The step-by-step with photos of the standard method is in how to put on a swim cap.

Care, and why two caps is the right number

Rinse in fresh water after every swim, dry it inside and out, and store it flat rather than balled up in a bag. Chlorine and creasing are what age silicone; an XL cap looked after this way will see out a season comfortably.

Buy two. These caps cost barely more than a standard one, they are the only cap that fits you, and a torn cap on a Saturday morning should not cancel a swim. If anyone in the household has a latex sensitivity, stay with silicone throughout — the material differences are in silicone vs latex vs lycra.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What swim cap is best for locs?

An extra-large silicone cap with the volume built into the crown, such as the SOUL CAP Extra Large. It covers locs rather than compressing them, which is what prevents both the tearing and the hairline tension a standard cap causes.

Do swim caps work on braids?

Yes, with the right shape. Shoulder-length braids or braids in a bun suit an asymmetric long-hair cap with rear volume. A full head of box braids needs the extra-large crown-volume cap instead.

Will a swim cap protect natural hair from chlorine?

It cuts exposure substantially but does not eliminate it, because the hairline seal is not watertight. Wetting your hair with clean water and applying a leave-in conditioner before the cap goes on does as much again.

What size extra-large swim cap should I buy?

Measure your head circumference and front-to-back length over your hair as you will wear it, then use the brand's own chart. Those measurements over an afro or loose locs are much larger than a bare-head measurement, which is exactly what the chart expects.

Why does my swim cap keep sliding off?

Usually one size too large, or the cap is being pulled over hair that pushes it forward instead of filling the crown. Size down one step, and seat the front edge at the hairline before rolling the cap back over the volume.
