Editorial Policy

Independence, sourcing, corrections and update cadence — the rules this site holds itself to.

Independence

Lap & Lake is written and edited by Janet H. and published by Janet Media Group. Editorial decisions are made independently of any commercial relationship.

  • No paid placement. No brand, retailer or manufacturer can buy a position, a mention, or a pick on this site. Not at any price.
  • No sponsored content. Nothing here is written on behalf of a brand, and there are no advertorials.
  • No brand review before publication. No manufacturer sees a page before it goes live or has any influence over it.
  • No free products. We are not sent samples, because we do not test products — so there is nothing for a brand to influence by sending one.
  • Commission does not decide picks. Where a cheaper product is better for the buyer, we recommend the cheaper product even where it pays less.

The site earns affiliate commissions, which is disclosed above the fold on every page carrying an affiliate link and explained in full at affiliate disclosure.

Accuracy and sourcing

  • Safety and health claims are never made without a named, linked authority. US Coast Guard for life jacket classification, approval and fit. CDC for swimmer's itch, swimmer's ear and recreational water illness. Standards bodies and the Skin Cancer Foundation for UPF.
  • No medical advice. Our health pages explain a condition, cite the authority, and direct readers to a clinician where that is the right answer. We do not diagnose and we do not prescribe.
  • Every statistic carries its source. If a number cannot be sourced, it does not appear on the page.
  • Product specifications come from the manufacturer's published spec, current at the time of writing.
  • Buyer feedback is labeled as buyer feedback. Where we report a recurring complaint we say it comes from public buyer reviews, never from our own use.
  • No fabricated prices, ratings, review counts or product claims. Ever, for any reason, including to fill a layout.

What we will not publish

  • Claims of hands-on testing. We do not test products and we never imply that we do. See how we pick.
  • Testimonials or reviews of this site. Lap & Lake has no customer reviews, so there are none to publish. A clean page beats a fabricated one.
  • Invented credentials. The editor's background is stated accurately on the about page and not embellished.
  • Manufactured urgency. No countdowns, no 'only three left', no invented sale windows.
  • Numeric product scores. A score implies a measurement we have not made.
  • Links to products that no longer exist. These get fixed, not left.

Corrections

Mistakes get corrected rather than quietly removed. If you find an error, email janet.hoyo@yahoo.com or use the contact form and tell us what is wrong and where.

  1. We check the claim against the original source.
  2. If we were wrong, we correct the page and re-date it.
  3. Where the correction is material — a safety point, a specification a purchase would turn on, a discontinued product — we note the correction on the page rather than editing silently.
  4. Where a reader raised it, we reply.

Update cadence

Every page shows a real last-updated date, and we do not bump dates without a substantive change. A date that moves for no reason is a small lie that makes every other date on the site worthless.

Authorship

Every page carries a named byline — Janet H. — linked to a real about page with a working contact address. There is no anonymous staff byline on this site and no article is published without an author.

Links to other sites

Outbound links fall into two kinds. Affiliate links to retailers are marked as sponsored and disclosed. Citations to authorities such as the CDC, the US Coast Guard and standards bodies are ordinary links, carry no commercial relationship, and exist so you can check what we said against the source.

We do not participate in link exchanges, buy links, or run a network of cross-linked sites to manufacture authority.
