Best Swim Ear Plugs for Kids and Adults (2026)
Three designs, two of which are consumable. Which one you need depends on the ear, not the price.
The short answer
Mack's AquaBlock is the pick for most swimmers: pre-molded silicone that seals the canal, in adult and child sizes, at pocket-change money. For a small child whose ears no pre-molded plug will seal, moldable putty is the answer instead - Mack's kids putty is six pairs for about the price of one pair of anything else.

Three designs, and only one of them lasts
"Swim ear plugs" covers three products that behave completely differently in the water and in your wallet. Pick the design first; the shortlist then takes about ten seconds.
Pre-molded flanged silicone plugs have a soft tapered body with ridges and a short stem. They seal the ear canal, they are washable, and a pair lasts a season or more. They are also the design most likely to not quite fit - a canal that is small, narrow or curved will leak around a shape that was molded for an average.
Moldable putty is a lump of soft silicone you roll and press over the canal opening. It fits any ear by definition, which is exactly why it is the answer for small children. The trade is that putty is semi-consumable: a pair holds a seal for a handful of swims, picks up sand and hair, and then stops working. That is why they are sold six pairs to a box.
Vented, sized reusable plugs are a rigid plug supplied in several sizes with a tiny vent through the middle. The vent passes sound and lets pressure equalize, so you can still hear and your ears do not pop as you duck under. They cost several times what putty costs and they last for years.
There is a fourth option this page cannot sell you: custom-fitted swim molds, taken from an impression of your own ear by an audiologist. They are the best-fitting plugs that exist and the CDC names them alongside caps and plugs in its own prevention advice. If a child has recurrent ear infections, that conversation with a clinician is worth more than anything on this list.
The six things worth checking
- Does it seal the canal or just cover the ear? Only a plug that enters the canal keeps water out. This is the one real difference between plugs and a swim cap, and it is why a cap alone does not solve an ear problem - a point we make at length in swim cap vs ear plugs.
- Size, and specifically child size. Child canals need plugs made for them. An adult plug trimmed down is not a child's plug, and a plug pushed too deep is its own hazard. Mack's sells a kids putty; the vented reusable pack here is adult only.
- Seal versus hearing. A good seal muffles sound. Around boats, docks and swim lessons that matters, which is the case for a vented plug - it trades a little water resistance for being able to hear an instructor or an engine.
- Reusable or consumable. Silicone plugs are a season purchase. Putty is a per-swim consumable. Compare price per pair, not price per box, and a six-pair box of putty is often cheaper per swim than a single pair of silicone.
- Floating, color, case. Dropped plugs are lost plugs. A floating plug in a bright color survives docks and boats; a case is the reason you still have them in August.
- Does it play nicely with a cap? A low-profile stem sits flush so a silicone cap pulls over it without dragging the plug out. A cap pulled over plugs is the combination that actually stays put all session - see how to put on a swim cap.

Mack's AquaBlock Earplugs
Pre-molded silicone plugs with a stem, which is what a cap cannot do: actually seal the ear canal.
Specifications
- Type
- Pre-molded silicone
- Sizes
- Adult and child
- Seal
- Ear canal
- Reusable
- Yes, washable
What works
- Seals the canal rather than covering the outer ear, which is the difference that matters for water entry
- Child sizes exist and genuinely fit smaller canals
- Washable and reusable across a season
- Cheap enough to keep a spare pair in the swim bag
What doesn’t
- Muffles sound, which is a real safety consideration around boats and busy water
- Pre-molded shapes do not fit every canal; some people need custom-molded plugs
Who it’s for
A swimmer prone to ear infections, or one who has had a perforated eardrum or ear surgery.
Bottom line
If the worry is ear infections, plugs are the tool and a cap is not. A cap over plugs holds them in place.

Mack's Soft Moldable Silicone Putty Ear Plugs, Kids Size
Moldable putty in a genuinely child-sized piece, six pairs for the price of a coffee.
Specifications
- Type
- Moldable silicone putty
- Size
- Kids
- Pack
- 6 pairs
- Fit
- Molds to the ear
- Made in
- USA
What works
- Putty molds to whatever shape a child's ear actually is, which solves the problem pre-molded plugs have with small and oddly shaped canals
- Six pairs means losing one at the lake is not an event
- The cheapest honest option in this category by a wide margin
- No stem to catch on a swim cap, so a cap pulls over them cleanly
- Mack's is the brand pharmacists stock, so it is easy to replace mid-season anywhere
What doesn’t
- Putty is semi-consumable - a pair survives a handful of swims before it stops holding a seal, which is why they come six to a box
- Picks up sand and hair, and once it does it is finished
- Fiddly for a child to fit alone; an adult rolls and seats them properly, a six-year-old usually does not
- They do not float, so a dropped plug in deep water is gone
Who it’s for
Young children, and anyone whose ears pre-molded plugs will not seal.
Bottom line
The pick when the ear is small or the shape is awkward. Buy them expecting to use up the box over a summer.

Putty Buddies Floating Swim Earplugs
The same moldable putty idea, made to float - which is the one feature that matters on open water.
Specifications
- Type
- Moldable putty, floating
- Pack
- 3 pairs
- Fit
- Molds to the ear
- Buoyancy
- Floats if dropped
- Colors
- Bright, easy to spot
What works
- Floats, so the plug that drops off the dock can be picked up instead of mourned
- Bright colors make a dropped plug findable on a wet deck or in shallow water
- Moldable fit works for children and for adults who cannot seal a pre-molded plug
- Popular with swim schools, which means a lot of parents have already proved they stay in
What doesn’t
- Three pairs for roughly four times the price per pair of Mack's kids putty
- Same consumable nature as any putty plug - they last swims, not seasons
- Soft putty can be pushed in too far by a child; an adult should seat them
- No case in the pack, so they end up loose in a swim bag collecting grit
Who it’s for
Lake and dock swimmers who have already lost a plug in deep water.
Bottom line
Pay the premium if your swimming happens over water you cannot reach into. Otherwise the cheaper putty does the same job.

Speedo Reusable Swim Ear Plugs
A softer silicone plug with a low-profile stem that does not catch on a cap.
Specifications
- Type
- Soft silicone, low-profile
- Sizes
- One size, adult
- Seal
- Ear canal, shallow
- Case
- Included
What works
- Low-profile shape sits flush, so pulling a cap over them does not dislodge them
- Softer silicone is comfortable for a long session
- Comes with a case, which is the difference between keeping them and losing them
- Less sound muffling than a deep-seal plug
What doesn’t
- Shallow seal is less watertight than a deep-canal plug
- Adult sizing only — no child version
Who it’s for
An adult lap swimmer who wants ear protection that plays nicely with a cap.
Bottom line
Comfortable and cap-friendly, but if you have a genuine ear-infection history, choose the deeper seal.

Doc's Proplugs Combo Pack, Vented
Four sizes of vented, reusable plug in one pack, so you stop guessing which size actually seals.
Specifications
- Type
- Vented, sized, reusable
- Sizes
- 4 in the pack (adult 18+)
- Vent
- Yes - passes sound and pressure
- Case
- Included
- Made in
- USA
What works
- Sizing is the whole problem with pre-molded plugs, and a four-size pack solves it without a return
- The vent passes sound and equalizes pressure, so you can still hear a boat or a lifeguard
- Properly reusable - these are a multi-season purchase, not a consumable
- Long-standing favorite among surfers and open-water swimmers who wear plugs every session
- Comes with a case, which is why people still have them a year later
What doesn’t
- Many times the price of a putty plug, and that is before you throw away the three sizes that do not fit
- Vented by design, so it is a water-reducing plug rather than a watertight one - if you need a full seal, the non-vented version is the one to buy
- Adult pack: sized 18+, so it is no help for a child
- Rigid plastic feels foreign for the first few swims compared with silicone
Who it’s for
Adults who swim often, need to hear, or have never found a plug that seals.
Bottom line
The grown-up answer in this category. Buy it if plugs are part of every swim; skip it if they are for two weeks of vacation.

Hearprotek Swimming Ear Plugs
Soft flanged silicone in two sizes per pack, which covers two different adults or a teen and a parent.
Specifications
- Type
- Pre-molded flanged silicone
- Pack
- 2 pairs
- Sizes
- Adult, two fits supplied
- Reusable
- Yes, washable
- Case
- Included
What works
- Two pairs in a pack means two people, or one person with a spare after the inevitable loss
- Soft flanged silicone seals the canal rather than just covering it
- Washable and reusable across a season, unlike putty
- Comes with a carry case at a price well below the sized reusable plugs
What doesn’t
- Adult sizing - not a child's plug, despite the listing language about all ages
- Hearprotek is an Amazon-native brand with no clinical track record behind it, unlike Mack's or Doc's
- A sealed flanged plug muffles sound noticeably, which matters around boats
- No vent, so pressure does not equalize as you duck under
Who it’s for
Two adults in one household who both want plugs without buying two boxes.
Bottom line
Good value if you need two pairs. Mack's AquaBlock is the better-known equivalent at a similar price per pair.
Do ear plugs actually prevent swimmer's ear?
They help, and the help is specific. Swimmer's ear is an infection of the outer ear canal that takes hold when water sits in the canal long enough to create a warm, moist environment. Less water in the canal means less of that.
The CDC's own prevention page puts it plainly. Under "keep ears as dry as possible" it recommends using a bathing cap, ear plugs, or custom-fitted swim molds when swimming, and then spends as much space on drying technique: tilt the head so each ear faces down to let water drain, pull the earlobe in different directions while it faces down, dry the ears well with a towel, and if water remains use a hair dryer on the lowest heat and fan setting held several inches away.
Two warnings from the same page are worth repeating because they cut against common household habits. Do not put objects in the ear canal - cotton-tip swabs, pencils, paperclips, keys - and do not try to remove ear wax, because the wax is part of the canal's own defense. And ear-drying drops are not for everyone: the CDC says to check with a healthcare provider first and not to use them if you have ear tubes, a punctured eardrum, swimmer's ear already, or ear drainage.
What plugs are not is a treatment. An ear that is already sore, itchy, draining or painful to the touch is a doctor's appointment, not a shopping problem - our swimmer's ear guide covers what the condition looks like and how long a lake-season case usually takes to settle.
Kids and plugs: what actually works
Most of the frustration parents have with swim plugs comes down to three things, and none of them is the brand.
- An adult fits them, every time. Roll putty warm, press it over the canal opening, and smooth the edges. A child pressing a plug in hard is the failure mode worth avoiding - deeper is not better and never has been.
- Expect to lose them. Plan around it. Six-pair boxes and floating plugs exist because a plug comes out on a dock, in sand, in a towel. One pair in a swim bag is one swim away from nothing.
- Put a cap over the top. A silicone cap holds plugs in place through dives, tube rides and a full lesson. If keeping hair dry is also part of the goal, read do swim caps keep hair dry? first, because the honest answer is "drier" rather than "dry".
- Tell the instructor. A child who cannot hear well with plugs in needs the instructor to know, or a vented design that passes sound. This is one of the few places where paying more buys a real functional difference.
If the child is swimming in a lake rather than a pool, the ear is only part of the picture. Lake water, warm shallows and long days bring their own irritations, which is what lake swimming safety and our swimmer's itch page exist for.
Fitting, cleaning and when to replace
Pre-molded silicone plugs go in with a gentle twist until the flanges seat - no force. If one leaks consistently in the same ear, the shape is wrong for that canal, and the fix is a different design rather than pushing harder. Rinse them in fresh water after every swim, dry them before they go back in the case, and replace them when the silicone goes tacky, stiff or torn at a flange.
Putty is different. Roll it between clean, dry fingers until it is soft, place it over the opening rather than into the canal, and smooth it flat. Once a pair has picked up grit or hair, it is finished - putty that will not sit flush is putty that leaks. A box lasts a summer for one swimmer and most of a summer for two.
Vented sized plugs are the ones worth looking after, because they are the ones you will still own next year. Wash them in warm soapy water, dry them fully, and keep them in the case with the right size noted, because the whole value of a multi-size pack disappears the moment nobody remembers which one fit.
One budget note to finish on. Plugs are among the cheapest items on a family's lake-season list, and the cost of skipping them is a doctor's visit in the middle of the holidays. If you are pricing a whole summer's gear, our family swim gear budget puts a box of plugs in the same category as goggles that fit: small money, disproportionate effect.
